the A-Z enterprise encompasses all aspects of day to day living. home furniture, clothing, food all become the sites of investigation in an ongoing endeavor to better understand human nature and the social construction of needs.
INTERLOPERS
The Interlopers HC is a formalization of a loosely knit hiking club that began as The Feral Spaniels in Los Angeles in 1998 for the purpose of pancakehikes in the LA Foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.
SMOCKSHOP
The smockshop is an artist run enterprise that generates income for artists whose work is either non-commercial, or not yet self sustaining. A smock i a simple double wrap around garment designed by Andrea Zittel - then sewn by artists who reinterpret the original design. As an active testament to Zittel's principle that "rules make us more creative", each resulting smock is completely unique and one of a kind.
HDTS
High Desert Test Sites is a series of experimental art sites located along a stretch of desert communities including Pioneer town, Yucca Valley, Joshuatree and 29 Palms. These locations provide alternative, free space for experimental work by both emerging and established artists.
A-Z EAST
In January 1994 the A-Z Enterprise was moved into this small three story storefront building in Brooklyn, NY, and for the following six years it functioned as a continually evolving showroom/testing-grounds called "A-Z East." This was the site of many of the most classic A-Z Prototypes, from the "A-Z Pit Bed" to the "A-Z Food Group Processing Unit".
A-Z WEST
A-Z West is located on twenty-five acres in the California high desert next to Joshua Tree National Park. Since fall 1999 the cabin and grounds have been undergoing an ongoing conversion into our all-new testing grounds for our " A-Z designs for living".
