A-Z Deserted Islands

1997

A-Z Deserted Islands are born of our culture’s deeply embedded fantasy of isolation, escape, and the lure of retreat within a “safe and predictable environment.” Reminiscent of tourist paddleboats, but lacking self-propulsion and tethered to an anchor, the large single-occupant fiberglass islands play off of the mix of recreation and tranquility associated with life on an island. Zittel has repeatedly returned to the theme of the island, which embodies our desire for individualism and autonomy.
