Reading a really good book by Francis Cape that I got from Ken and Julianne – Cape says that sharing a bench means "sharing the same material support and also sitting at the same level” – He makes replicas of benches that were made and used by historic communes and writes about the relation of their ideology to the material culture that they produce. It’s also sort of interesting that the shakers sat in chairs when they ate their meals so that individuals could get back to work when they were done eating without disturbing everyone else.
